Geological, Physical and Chemical Properties of Himalayan Salt Crystals

The formation of the Himalayan Crystal Salt goes back to the formation of the Himalaya Mountains which started about 250 million years ago. The Himalayas used to be the ocean floor and when they started to rise, first, huge salt lakes formed and eventually they turned into enormous salt domes. These salts contain all of the 84 elements that the human body is composed of. They are as pure as the ancient primal oceans.

Himalayan Crystal Salts crystallize in isometric system, usually in the form of cubes, and shows perfect cubic cleavage. It has a hardness of 2.5 and specific gravity of 2.16.Salt crystals melt at 804° C (1479° F) and begin to vaporize at temperatures just slightly above this. Because they are transparent to infrared radiation, salt crystals are used for making the prisms and lenses of instruments used in the study of infrared radiation.
